Established in 1894, A.K. Smiley Public Library has served generations of patrons in the City of Redlands and beyond. The only “admission fee” is curiosity. Lifelong learning is at the center of activity in the beautiful, historic building and attractive grounds!

Civil War Christmas Carols: December 16

The holidays were a trying time during the American Civil War. Soldiers separated from families, the loss of loved ones, and the horrors of war were at the forefront of people’s minds. Music and thoughts of the holidays provided a respite from the harsh realities around them and served as a boost to the morale of Americans on both sides of the conflict.

On Saturday, December 16, the Camp Carleton Brass Quartet will play a concert of traditional Christmas music in the Lincoln Memorial Shrine at 11am. Come hear the songs as soldiers long ago might have heard them.

Adam Miller – Folk Songs of the Winter Holidays: December 12th

 

Premier autoharpist, folk singer and storyteller, Adam Miller will perform well-known and not-so-well-known traditional folk songs and carols for New Year’s, Hanukkah, Christmas, and the Winter Solstice.  Join us in the assembly room of A.K. Smiley library enjoy the sounds of the holidays.

Peter Lenker – A Sankey Source: A New View: October 18th

 

Local researcher Peter Lenker will deliver a program presenting his research into the origin of the word Sankey.  Deriving from the Spanish word Zanja, meaning a ditch, old time Redlanders have long referred to this geographic feature as the “Sankey.”  Mr. Lenker will be discussing the various interpretations behind this word.

The program will take place at 4 pm on Wednesday, October 18 in the Library’s Assembly Room.  Admission is free.

Learn resume skills, interview techniques, and much more. Ideal for career changers, people recently laid off, recent graduates, people returning to work, and people who are looking for their first job. NO REGISTRATION REQUIRED, but plan to arrive early as seating is limited.
