Celebrate Women’s History Month
A.K. Smiley Public Library will commemorate Women’s History Month with “Becoming Mrs. Sarah Jane Rousseau” by journalist Janelle Molony on Saturday, March 9 at 11am in the library’s Assembly Room and on Zoom (passcode 536433). A descendant of Rousseau, Molony will share the story of Rousseau’s journey to San Bernardino in the nineteenth century.
One of San Bernardino County’s more notable female pioneers, Sarah Jane Rousseau is known for her 1864 diary about the overland journey to California of the “Pella Company” that features young celebrity lawmen in the Earp family. In her earlier life, Sarah was a member of England’s landed gentry and a highly accomplished piano forte player. After immigrating to the United States in the 1830s, she became a sought-after finishing school teacher and almost a First Lady.
Janelle Molony is an award-winning author and journalist, and a member of the Western Writers of America and Oregon-California Trails Association. She is a verified descendant of the Rousseau family and the publisher of the incredible story, The 1864 Diary of Mrs. Sarah Jane Rousseau (M Press Publishing, 2023). She hosts the Wyoming Historical Society’s YouTube series, “Women of Wyoming: Then & Now.” Her latest release, Emigrant Tales of the Platte River Raids, recently ranked #1 on Amazon for Biographies on the Civil War. Smiley LIVE! Claremont Voodoo Society
Smiley LIVE! Presents: Claremont Voodoo Society Wednesday, March 27, 6:30 PM The Contemporary Club This free public event is part of the Smiley LIVE! concert series. It’s family-friendly, with a Q&A segment where young and old alike can ask the performers questions about their music, their performance, and anything else they may be curious about. If you want to hear early Baroque music the way it was intended to be played, you’ll need period instruments and dedicated musicians steeped in the idiom. If you want to hear great American roots music, you’ll need the same sort of thing; dedicated virtuosi who speak blues and rock without a contemporary pop accent and who are true believers in the musical form.
American Roots music is populated by the giants of our rich musical history; Little Walter, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, The Band, Tom Waits, Hank Williams, Jelly Roll Morton, and Merle Haggard just to name a few. The Society is made-up of a few skilled, like-minded craftsmen who respect the power of the shadow these musicians cast over our musical landscape.
“Every man has a dream but few are brave or crazy enough to pursue it.” The Society is Jerry O’Sullivan, Bill Barrett, Roy Durnal, Lazy Brad Lewis and Ray McNamara’s dream; a musical collective made of great musicians playing originals and obscure covers of gutbucket blues, rock, and epic ballads in the manner of Van Morrison and Muddy Waters. An evening spent listening to CVS is a tour of the landscape of American Roots music and a ride through the history of the genre.
