The holidays were a trying time during the American Civil War. Soldiers separated from families, the loss of loved ones, and the horrors of war were at the forefront of people’s minds. Music and thoughts of the holidays provided a respite from the harsh realities around them and served as a boost to the morale of Americans on both sides of the conflict.
On Saturday, December 16, the Camp Carleton Brass Quartet will play a concert of traditional Christmas music in the Lincoln Memorial Shrine at 11am. Come hear the songs as soldiers long ago might have heard them.

Premier autoharpist, folk singer and storyteller, Adam Miller will perform well-known and not-so-well-known traditional folk songs and carols for New Year’s, Hanukkah, Christmas, and the Winter Solstice. Join us in the assembly room of A.K. Smiley library enjoy the sounds of the holidays.

Local researcher Peter Lenker will deliver a program presenting his research into the origin of the word Sankey. Deriving from the Spanish word Zanja, meaning a ditch, old time Redlanders have long referred to this geographic feature as the “Sankey.” Mr. Lenker will be discussing the various interpretations behind this word.
The program will take place at 4 pm on Wednesday, October 18 in the Library’s Assembly Room. Admission is free.
