Hollywood's first and arguably best canine superstar was Rin Tin Tin, a five-day-old German Shepherd found wounded in battle in WWI France and adopted by an American soldier, Lee Duncan. He would sign his own contracts with his paw print.

An adult dog has 42 teeth.  (An adult human has 32.)

A dog’s shoulder blades are unattached to the rest of the skeleton to allow greater flexibility for running.

The most dogs ever owned by one person were 5,000 Mastiffs owned by Kubla Khan
.

The average dog can run about 19 mph. Greyhounds are the fastest dogs on Earth and can run at speeds of 45 mph.

One survey reports that 33 percent of dog owners admit they talk to their dogs on the phone or leave messages on answering machines while they are away.

Dogs can smell about 1000 times better than humans. While humans have 5 million smell-detecting cells, dogs have more than 220 million. The part of the brain that interprets smell is also four times larger in dogs than in humans.

The Mighty Pigeon Club - Seven children (and one dog) watch Arthur's homing pigeons flying through the clouds. Arthur's school presentation about pigeons piques their interest even more. When Arthur becomes allergic, the gang takes his pigeons and turns the clubhouse into a coop. Things don't go well, however; neighbors complain, the work is considerable, and there's poop everywhere. Plans to give the birds away also meet with problems. Set sometime in the middle of the last century, the story happily looks back to a time when kids ran in packs around the neighborhood and built clubhouses. San Souci's expansive watercolors humorously capture the nonstop action, and his cartoon-style characters, uniquely individualized, extend the book's good humor.             Ilene Cooper - from amazon.com
