Book reading and discussion with author Carlos Cortes

The A. K. Smiley Library and the Inlandia Institute will present Dr. Carlos Cortes,

University of California, Riverside Professor Emeritus, in a literary dialogue about

his new book Rose Hill: An Intermarriage Before its Time at the A.K. Smiley Library,

125 West Vine, Redlands, on Tuesday, May 29, 2012 beginning at 6:00.

The event will feature an opportunity to meet the author, hear short selections from the book

and participate in an open discussion about the book, civil liberties and cultural journey in a multicultural society.

Special Exhibit honoring Redlands Organizations, April 15th

A second in a series of exhibits highlighting the 40^th anniversary of the Heritage Room archives and Special Collections at Smiley Library will be held on Sunday, April 15, 2012 between 2:00 and 5:00 p.m. The exhibit theme will feature collections of organizations whose historical material is housed in the Heritage Room. “We have a rich diversity in the collections which represent existing organizations, ranging from groups like the Redlands Horticultural & Improvement Society to the Zonta Club of Redlands,” said associate archivist Nathan Gonzales.

“Many organizations that no longer exist also had an important influence upon Redlands and left a legacy,” added archivist and head of Special Collections Don McCue. “For example, The House of Neighborly Service, League of Western Writers, Schubert Club, and Arrowhead Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.”

Photographs, posters, minute books, and letters from famous authors will highlight the exhibit. “This is a good opportunity to see how more than 20 organizations have helped to make Redlands the distinctive community it is,” added Gonzales.

Just days ago, a scrapbook of “Teen Post,” a 1966 organization established for young people on Redlands’s north side, was given by Los Angeles resident Dennis Hernandez. “Gene Hernandez was the first director,” said McCue, “and Dennis, his son, wanted this unique part of Redlands history preserved in the archives.” It was housed in the old Hall of Justice Building on north Fifth Street. The scrapbook will be on display during the Open House exhibit. Special floral arrangements in honor of the Horticultural Society’s 100^th Flower Show anniversary will be displayed in the Heritage Room.

Will J’s Coffee Cafe – Located Downstairs

Will J’s Coffee Cafe on the lower level of AKSPL offers a variety of coffees, teas, and hot chocolate.

The new cafe has tables and chairs where patrons can sit and enjoy their drinks, but you are also welcome to enjoy your covered beverage throughout the library, except in areas near public computers.

The newly designed coffee bar was funded by the Will J. Reid Foundation and was specifically designed to be enjoyed by study groups, wireless users, and book lovers alike.

Redlands Adult Literacy Program

The Redlands Adult Literacy Program has been awarded a 2011 Community Impact Fund Grant of $9534 from the Community Foundation Serving Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. The grant will be used to develop an adult literacy computer lab at the A. K. Smiley Public Library, expand public outreach to adult learners in the Redlands community and enhance the adult literacy tutor training program.
