SMILEY LIBRARY CELEBRATES LEO POLITI
When A.K. Smiley Public Library opens at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 26, 2008, patrons may pick up a brochure and map for a self-guided tour of Leo Politi’s art and books. At 2:00 p.m. that afternoon, a children’s program will be given featuring Ann Stalcup, author of Leo Politi: Artist of the Angels. Stalcup wrote her 2004 biography of Politi based on a decades-long friendship with the artist-author. She will have copies of her book available for sale and will sign them after the program. At 3:00 p.m., a brief awards ceremony will be held for participants of the “Write a Mural Story” contest. Winners will receive a copy of one of Politi’s books. Refreshments will be hosted in the Children’s Garden by the Friends of the Library immediately following the programs.
On Sunday, April 27, 2008 at 3:00 p.m., a panel consisting of Paul and Suzanne Politi, children of Leo Politi, and Ann Stalcup will present a program for adults honoring Politi. The program will be followed by refreshments hosted by the Friends of the Library in the Redlands Federal Garden.
Beginning on Saturday, April 26, and continuing through the month of May, special bookmarks of the mural painted by Politi for the Young Readers’ Room will be available for patrons and visitors throughout the library.
