A.K. Smiley Public Library

Serving the City of Redlands, California since 1894

Because of California's Regional Stay Home Order to slow the spread of COVID-19, in-person services are suspended until further notice. Books to Go, eLibrary, and Virtual Story Time are available and we are looking into other ways to continue to service the community. Read more about how Smiley Library is protecting the community from COVID-19.

Library Days: May 19

“California’s Rancho Heritage” at the 7th annual Library Days at A.K. Smiley Public Library, Saturday, May 19, 10am-2pm

Library Days is here again! Thanks to the financial support of a generous donor, for the eighth year Smiley Library will celebrate Library Days. Library Days brings the community together to experience the many avenues the Library has to explore.

After a couple of years of intemperate heat in June, the decision was made to move this year’s event to the more hospitable month of May. The festivities begin in Smiley Park Saturday, May 19 at 10am, and the fun lasts until 2pm. The theme of this year’s Library Days is “California’s Rancho Heritage” and will feature music, cultural events, a lecture, and a complimentary meal.

At 10:30am, historians Jim and Tish Sandos will present a program in the Assembly Room about music in California’s missions, an integral part of mission life.

A very special exhibit of early California historical materials will be on display in the Heritage Room, featuring items like the first school book printed in California, Tablas Para Los Niños; a copy of the proclamation elevating Los Angeles to “ciudad”, or city; and the 1847 proclamation stating the United States’ intention to annex Alta California, printed in both English and Spanish.
