Volunteer in Special Collections

A.K. Smiley Public Library welcomes volunteers of any age. Volunteers in Special Collections have the opportunity to work with historic photographs, artifacts, and documents related to the history of Redlands, San Bernardino County, Abraham Lincoln, and the Civil War.

Student Volunteers

The Special Collections Division is always interested in helping to create volunteer internship opportunities for college students in partnership with their academic institution. A program can be coordinated through a faculty advisor for potential course credit, or can simply be a volunteer experience.

Summer Internship

A.K. Smiley Public Library offers two 200-hour paid summer internships. The program is intended to give undergraduate students interested in the field of public history the opportunity to learn more about that field as a career option. Students work directly with collections, including evaluating materials, digitization, and primary source research. Theoretical and philosophical discussions about aspects of the field are included to help create a foundation upon which to understand the field and how archivists and curators approach collections and collection development. The Library will begin to accept applications in mid-April; if students are interested in being notified when applications will be accepted, send an email to heritage@akspl.org to be added to the list.

Lincoln Memorial Shrine

A part of the Special Collections Division, the Lincoln Memorial Shrine is a museum and research center dedicated to the study of Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War. Volunteer opportunities are available working with historic collections and as museum docents. For more information, contact the Heritage Room at (909)798-7632 or email heritage@akspl.org.
