A.K. Smiley Public Library

Serving the City of Redlands, California since 1894

Established in 1894, A.K. Smiley Public Library has served generations of patrons in the City of Redlands and beyond. The only “admission fee” is curiosity. Lifelong learning is at the center of activity in the beautiful, historic building and attractive grounds!

South Carolina Rice, Plantations, slaves and freedom: February 27

Local Historian Mark Radeleff will deliver a presentation on South Carolina rice, plantations, slaves and freedom. Mr. Radeleff will concentrate on how rice became important during the antebellum years and the need for slavery to grow it. He will also discuss the impact of the Civil War on the enslaved, the enlistment of freedmen into the army, and the post war status of plantations and former slaves who returned.
