Only 6- to 12-year-old children who live in Redlands may enter.
To enter, answer the riddle and send your answer, name, age and phone number to email@example.com or take it to the Young Readers’ Room at the A.K. Smiley Public Library.
All correct answers will be entered into a random drawing. One entry per child will be valid.
Answers must be submitted by June 19 and the winner will be notified June 20.
The May riddle answer was “Burger Bar.” There will be a new riddle every month throughout the season.
The contest is co-sponsored by the Rochford Foundation, A.S. Smiley Library and The Daily Facts.
Here’s a story you’ve heard, or you may not yet know:
On the corner of Central and Orange long ago
The Chittenden building stood two stories tall.
“Oh, no! cried the owner, “we can’t let it fall!”
When the city said Chittenden had to come down
‘Cause the interstate highway was coming through town.
After one year, they reached compromise:
Chop off its top; bottom floor to half size.
Highway 99 got four lanes across
But Chittenden’s seven feet wide—what a loss!
The very next year, nineteen-and-thirty-two,
It became what it’s been since, all these years through.
Neighbors on one side now make chocolate sweet
And next door on Orange Street they dance on their feet.
And speaking of feet, do you know what’s there now?
(hint: the owners use thread, glue and hide of cow.)
