Only 6- to 12-year-old children who live in Redlands may enter.
To enter, answer the riddle and send your answer, name, age and phone number to email@example.com or take it to the Young Readers’ Room at the A.K. Smiley Public Library.
All correct answers will be entered into a random drawing. One entry per child will be valid.
Answers must be submitted by August 30 and the winner will be notified August 31.
There will be a new riddle every month throughout the season.
The contest is co-sponsored by the Rochford Foundation, A.S. Smiley Library and The Daily Facts.
A young man left home, came across the deep seas
He’d lived in the Azores, he was Portuguese.
He traveled by boat, then by train, then streetcars.
He had just seven dollars and two new cigars.
But he knew what he wanted: a grove of orange trees.
There was work here In Redlands; he saved all his pay.
When his brother came too, he knew he would stay.
Now there’s acres of citrus and their dreams here are thriving.
The orange groves they planted are the largest surviving.
The oranges sold locally and shipped far away.
Redlands, of course, is the perfect location.
Now their business is run by the third-generation.
“From Our Family Farm” remains still their motto:
Juicy melons, fresh corn, and ripe avocado.
And oranges, of course-the best in the nation!
Zucchini that’s green and a big red tomato
When wintertime comes, buy purple potato.
They’ve got honey and jellies- but nothing that’s bland.
Their name? Here’s a hint: can you find a fruit stand?
Their name’s on a sign, so I’m sure you will know.
